Fall TV: Is 'Frequency' the Best Reboot Series of the Season?

The rush to turn old movies into new TV series has met with mixed success so far this fall, but there are indications that one new reboot series could have what it takes to find real success. The CW's Frequency updates an elderly movie, and it taps into some premise devices that are pretty common on TV now, but it's getting warm reviews from critics nonetheless.

The original film on which the new series is based starred Jim Caviezel and Dennis Quaid. Caviezel's character is a young man who, through some mysterious process, is able to communicate via a radio with his long-deceased father, played by Quaid. The pair are able to establish the relationship they were never able to have while Quaid's character was alive, and they also manage to solve a murder.

In the update, the child is played by Peyton List, and the father is played by Riley Smith. In this version, both characters are detectives, and there is a series of murders to solve, as well. But this new version also concentrates on the personal relationship between father and daughter, and that's where critics say that the series stands out.

Comparisons between Frequency and Timeless, NBC's new time-traveling drama, have been widespread, but aside from the sci-fi plot device, the two series seem to have little in common.

Frequency premieres October 5 on The CW.
