'Everybody Loves Raymond''s Doris Roberts Dies at 90

Doris Roberts, best known as the actress who portrayed Ray Romano's mother on the CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, died this week at the age of 90. She had been active as an actress, however, since the early 1950s and had appeared in many TV series and films.

Roberts first television role was in the series Studio One in 1952, and throughout the 50s and 60s, she appeared in such series as Ben Casey, The Naked City and The Defenders. In the 70s and 80s, she had roles in series such as Alice, Barney Miller and Soap, and in the 1980s, she appeared in series such as St. Elsewhere and Perfect Strangers. She also had a recurring role as Mildred Krens, the sassy secretary on Remington Steele, opposite Pierce Brosnan.

It was her role as Marie Barone, the outspoken foil to her husband, Peter Boyle's Frank Barone, on Everybody Loves Raymond that gained Roberts the biggest acclaim of her career. For that role, she was nominated for seven Emmy Awards, and she won the award four times.

Roberts is survived by a son, Michael Cannata Jr.
