Episode 'The Voice' Season 1, Episode 5 - 'The Battles, Part 3' Recap

Episode 'The Voice' Season 1, Episode 5 - 'The Battles, Part 3' Recap It's time for round three of the battles, as four more pairs of performers must go head-to-head. The past two weeks have left Patrick Thomas and Jared Blake on Blake Shelton's team, Frenchie Davis and Beverly McLellan on Christina's team, Vicci Martinez and Nakia on Cee Lo's team and Casey Weston and Javier Colon on Adam's team.

Christina's pair will be Raquel and Julia, who will be singing "Only Girl in the World" by Rihanna. The two are very young, but still have a ton of talent. Both of them sound great in the rehearsals already...Sia tells Julia that she needs to relax her vocal chords a bit. She also talks about peeing her pants. Raquel gets a note about her pitch (as does Julia)...apparently they're both pushing it. We'll see if that carries over.

Raquel vs. Julia: FIGHT!

Raquel looks like she might either throw up or cry before she goes on. They both start a little soft, as if they're not singing into their mics. Raquel is definitely moving around a bit too much, and Julia is having a LOT of pitch problems for sure. It wasn't the greatest performance from either of them, but I don't see how anyone could resist a character like Raquel, who has a strong voice but looks like she's about four feet tall.

The three other coaches seem to be leaning toward Raquel, and as Christina starts to talk about both of them, it becomes clear whom she's going to choose. NBC, of course, tries to make it more dramatic by cutting to commercial, but it's no surprise when they come back and Christina chooses the 16-year-old Raquel.

Winner: Raquel

Blake Shelton chooses Dia and Serabee, who are going to sing "You Can't Hurry Love" by The Supremes. Dia has a breathy, bubbly voice that doesn't exactly scream Supremes, but Serabee has a lot of power.

Dia mentions that she has trouble with stage fright, which Blake and Reba basically tell her to get over it. Blake tells Serabee not to over-sing.

Dia vs. Sara: FIGHT!

Serabee is spinning around backstage in bare feet, which it looks like is what she'll be performing in. Can she go home please?

Dia starts off with about half the song, and really seems out of her element. She's definitely nervous, and is singing a song that isn't her style, but she still sounds good. Serabee just warbles through the thing...she's kind of screechy and annoying. Adam says he would go with Serabee. Cee Lo says it was "bizarre" but notes that Dia has the nicer voice.

Blake goes with Dia. Phew! Anyone who can annoy me in less than 15 minutes of screen time definitely needs to go home. Bye Serabee.

Winner: Dia

Adam chooses Rebecca and Devon, and assigns them "Creep" by Radiohead. Why? Because "it just felt right." It's a dark song, one that is out of place in this competition, but a great song nonetheless. Devon sang "I'm Yours," which couldn't be more different from "Creep." Rebecca sang a folky cover of "Come As You Are," so "Creep" should be right up her alley. Advantage so far goes to Rebecca.

Devon doesn't really know the song, so he has to learn it on the spot. How can you not know "Creep"? Stop listening to Jason Mraz and listen to some real music, kid!

Rebecca vs. Devon: FIGHT!

The two actually blend really well during the performance, and the harmonies the team came up with for the chorus sound great, and they bring the house down on the big note during the bridge. That's what happens when you pick a song that's actually good.

Blake says that Adam just shouldn't pick one, since they were both so great. Christina and Cee Lo both pick Devon. Adam is completely at a loss, but eventually goes with Devon. He makes sure to stop Rebecca, hug her, and tell her "don't stop doing this," which is kind of sweet.

Winner: Devon

Cee Lo chooses the sisters Tori and Taylor, who will take on Kelsey. They're assigned "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield...yeah, remember when that song was EVERYWHERE?

Kelsey is at a bit of a disadvantage going up against two singers, but the two sisters are young and the song seems a little out of their range. The rehearsals bring some downright adorable choreography for the trio, which you could tell NBC loved as it was in every commercial this week.

Kelsey vs. Tori & Taylor: FIGHT!

Kelsey starts things off, and the Thompsons come in with their harmony, which sounds good. The three-way blend doesn't go as well. It's pretty clear that Kelsey is the strongest singer on the stage. The girls are cute, but a little too inexperienced, and they look like novices compared to Kelsey.

Adam notes there's "too much cuteness" on the stage to make a choice. Blake thinks Kelsey sounds more seasoned, but Christina thinks Tori and Taylor took it. Aftera lot of thinking (and removal of his sunglasses!), Cee Lo goes with Tori and Taylor. A very surprising choice...it really seemed like Kelsey was the clear winner there.

Winner: Tori & Taylor

Next week brings the final battle round that will determine the contestants for the live performances. Come back next Tuesday to find out who makes it! Hey, what else are you going to be doing? "Glee" and "American Idol" are done.
