Episode 'Modern Family' Season 2, Episode 21 - 'Mother's Day' Recap

Episode 'Modern Family' Season 2, Episode 21 - 'Mother's Day' Recap Mother's Day is coming up, so of course "Modern Family" is jumping on the opportunity for some family dynamic fun.

One of the storylines has Claire and Gloria hiking with their kids...with predictable results. The kids are miserable the whole time and whine until Claire finally loses it and leaves them behind. That prompts the Dunphy children to plot their revenge: no apologies.

Gloria, meanwhile, reluctantly lets loose about the things that Manny does to annoy her. The only problem is, Manny overhears. Claire almost fixes the situation, but then Gloria throws her under a bus and tells Manny that he's the perfect child. "Yeah, that's healthy," says Claire.

Back at home, Phil and Jay are working on making the Mother's Day meal when Phil happens across a poem that Jay made for his mother when he was 9 years old.

The memory actually causes Jay to tear up, until he puts on Phil's onion goggles ("What are you looking at?!"). Later, at the dinner table, Jay tells a story about his mother that really causes the waterworks to start: "You only get one mom," he sobs. That, of course, bring the apology out of the Dunphy kids and patches everything up.

But the storyline of the week (at least the most interesting one) is a feud that comes up between Mitchell and Cameron after Mitchell brings Cam breakfast in bed on Mother's Day. The two of them reveal that gay men hate to be thought of as women: "We don't have that time of the month, we don't love pink," says Cameron (but pink loves him).

The high point, though, is when Cam tries to be macho, throws a long bomb, hits an old guy off his bike, and does his Cameron run over to him ("Cam! Hands!").

A cute episode, maybe not the best the show has done, but one that serves the holiday well. Plus, Luke's random facts were pretty good.
