The End of a Controversy: MTV's 'Skins' Cancelled

The End of a Controversy: MTV's 'Skins' Cancelled Alas, poor "Skins," we barely knew ye. Though most of the characters on the show "knew" each other, if ya know what I'm sayin'.

MTV has officially cancelled its racy new series "Skins" following a public backlash and a subsequent decline in ratings. The show, which is adapted from the UK version of the same name, follows a group of high school students who engage in an amount of partying and sexual activity that was shocking to some parents and TV watchdog groups.

The show premiered strong for MTV, having benefited from a heavy ad campaign during "Jersey Shore" (those who watch "Shore" will know just how heavy it was) and a prime post-"Shore" time slot. The 3.3 million total viewers, 2.7 of which were in the target demo of 12-34, seemed to indicate success for the show.

However, public outcry over the show's content caused advertisers such as Wrigley, General Motors and Taco Bell to withdraw their support for the show. The ratings dwindled until the finale, which managed to draw in only 1.2 million viewers. Part of the controversy was that young actors, some of them still in their teens, were cast in the promiscuous roles.

Did you watch "Skins?" Will you be sad to see it go?
