Is Eddie Murphy The Right Person to Host The Oscars?

Eddie Murphy has been somewhat out of the spotlight for a while but that may all come to an end, as Murphy is in talks to host the 2012 Academy Awards.

Deadline reported this weekend that Murphy had been approached by Oscars producer Brett Ratner about the possibility of the hosting gig and expressed his interest.

Though this may seem a surprising move by the Academy, it may actually be just what they need.

Last year's co-hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway got some pretty rough reviews, with critics saying that Franco and his cohost, were "boring" and "uninspiring," even "spectacularly bad."

A video of James Franco's Top 10 most stoned-looking moments during the ceremony even came out soon after the ceremony.

This move would obviously be a great one for Murphy. His acting career has been relatively quiet with the exception of a recurring voiceover role in the "Shrek" series and some children's movies, but he's on the brink of a new film,"Tower Heist," and an Oscars gig just might put him back into the minds and hearts of Hollywood's elite.

Eddie has already solidified himself as an actor, but what he does need to earn is respect from his peers? Can he pull off hosting one of the biggest, highest-rated awards show? In an age where up and coming comedians like Kevin Hart have stolen the spotlight, is Murphy still relevant? Can he do the job, or does it demand someone with more recent hits?

This could be Murphy's redemption song, and we'll know soon if he is ready to accept the challenge.
