'Duck Dynasty' Star Phil Robertson Suspended for Anti-Gay Remarks, Fans Propose Boycott
by Andy NeuenschwanderCould this be the end of a dynasty?
"Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson has cause a major stir with anti-gay remarks made in a recent interview with GQ. In the interview, Robertson called homosexuality "illogical," saying that "a vagina...would be more desirable than a man's anus."
Robertson employed a "slippery slope" argument, saying that "sin becomes fine" if society isn't careful. "Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there," he said. "Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men."
Understandably, many viewers are upset.
A&E, the network that airs the show, reacted quickly, announcing that they had suspended Phil Robertson from the show until further notice.
However, that only created another backlash: Christian fans have been speaking out against the network on Twitter, even calling for a boycott of the show.
Meanwhile, the Robertson family has thrown their support behind Phil. "While some of Phil's unfiltered comments to the reporter were coarse, his beliefs are grounded in the teachings of the Bible," they wrote in a letter to fans. "We have had a successful working relationship with A&E but, as a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm. We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of 'Duck Dynasty.'"
That last bit has fans of the show worried; could that mean the end of the show? The fifth season is set to premiere on January 17th, but this very public kerfuffle could put filming of future seasons in danger.
On Twitter, the battle continues. Mostly through memes like these:
