DreamWorks Animation Planning Two 'How To Train Your Dragon' Sequels
by Sean ComerDid you fall in love with DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon?" Did your kids?
If so, then the next three years will be like 36 or so months of Christmas. If not, then it'll be like 36 or so months of non-stop department-store Christmas Muzak.
The Disney-rivaling animation studio recently unveiled its next three years of releases, and about a third of it is spent following up on previous hits.
Most notably, the aforementioned 2010 animated summer hit is slated for two sequels, due respectively on June 20, 2014, and June 18, 2016. The original made $494.9 million in 2010, making it one of that summer's hotter theatrical releases.
That's not the only cash cow set to get a milking. Between the two sequels, "The Penguins of Madagascar" will feature the trio of arctic espionage-aficionado side characters from the previous three "Madagascar" features in their own feature film on March 27, 2015. Before the second planned "How To Train Your Dragon" sequel hits theaters, "Kung Fu Panda 3" will also be arriving March 18, 2016. In 2011, "Kung Fu Panda 2" was a $665.7-million box office smash.
Arguably the next most-recognizable name on the slate, DreamWorks is also diving into a TV-to-Movie adaptation. "Mr. Peabody & Sherman," based on the "Rocky & Bullwinkle" accompanying shorts about an astute dog named Mr. Peabody and his boy, is set for Nov. 1, 2013.
