Does New Netflix Original Glamorize Anorexia?

After a spring where Netflix was criticized for its original series 13 Reasons Why potentially romanticizing revenge suicide, they’re now being met with backlash for their original film To The Bone. While this won’t premiere on the service until July 14th, the internet is already raising an eyebrow at how the film portrays eating disorders and mental illness.

To The Bone, which stars Lily Collins and Keanu Reeves, depicts a young woman’s struggle with anorexia, and the trailer alone shows Collins’ Ellen as alarmingly skinny. Collins, who has struggled with eating disorders in the past recently told Shape, “I was terrified that doing the movie would take me backward, but I had to remind myself that they hired me to tell a story, not to be a certain weight. In the end, it was a gift to be able to step back into shoes I had once worn but from a more mature place.”
