'Doctor Who''s Karen Gillan Gets Lead in New Pilot

'Doctor Who''s Karen Gillan Gets Lead in New Pilot Karen Gillan isn't on "Doctor Who" any more, but she's working on keeping a high profile lately. She'll be appearing in "Guardians of the Galaxy" in August, but she's also landed a role in a new sitcom being developed for ABC.

In "Selfie," Gillan will play Eliza Dooley, a young woman who asks a marketing expert for help in improving her reputation after some online mishaps damage her image. If the character's name and the show's premise sound somewhat familiar, it's because the story is a contemporary take on "My Fair Lady," in which Eliza Doolittle gets a social make-over from marketing expert Henry Higgins.

"Selfie" will be written and produced by Emily Kapnek, whose previous writing credits include "Suburgatory" (which she also created), "As Told By Ginger" and "Emily's Reasons Why Not." The show's pilot will be directed by Julie Anne Robinson ("Suburgatory," "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," "The Middle," "Parks and Recreation," "The Middle"). ABC has ordered a pilot of "Selfie," and it is one of 11 new comedy pilots ordered by the network this season.

Gillan starred alongside Matt Smith in seasons five through seven of "Doctor Who," in which she played the Doctor's companion, Amy Pond. She was also featured in "NTSF: SD: SUV" on Adult Swim.
