Disney Developing Feature Film Starring Mickey, Donald and Goofy

Disney has said that "Tangled" might be their last "Disney Princess" fairy tale musical for a while. So where does that leave Disney? What do they make movies about, if not fairy tales?

Disney producer/story supervisor/artist Bunny Mattinson has an idea: why not go back the the ol' drawing board and make a movie starring Disney's "Big Three": Goofy, Donald Duck, and Mickey Mouse?

"I am working on just an idea of my own which is basically a Mickey, Donald, Goofy feature film idea," said Mattinson. "We have to present it first to the bosses to get the green light."

The last time Mickey, Donald and Goofy appeared in a feature film together was in 2004 with the release of "The Three Musketeers" and "Mickey's Twice upon a Christmas," the latter of which was the first Mickey Mouse movie with CGI animation.

What's different here is that it seems Mattinson wants to cast Mickey, Donald and Goofy in an all-new, original story, not a re-telling of a literary classic (as so many Mickey movies have been).

This could be a great project if done right: after all, when Disney decided to put Goofy in a new original story they ended up with the delightful musical "A Goofy Movie," which remains a fan favorite. Let's just hope they go with traditional animation instead of CGI!

As we reported yesterday, Mattinson and Disney aren't the only ones feeling the nostalgia for truly classic cartoon characters as of late. The Cartoon Network will be launching an all new Looney Tunes show in May, and will be bringing back many of the old characters from the golden age of cartoons in the process (i.e. Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, Sylvester and Tweety, The Roadrunner, Yosemite Sam).

What do you think? Should Disney go through with a Mickey movie, or should they stick to the princesses? Is the new trend towards revisiting classic cartoon characters a good thing?
