Disney Announces Dates for Jungle Book 2, Other Big Movies
by EG
Disney's The Jungle Book is still the hottest movie in America, so it's prime time for the studio to be talking about a sequel. The studio this week announced a collection of weekend dates during which it will release the big new movies it's currently working on, including the sequel to Jon Favreau's hit about the jungle boy and his animal friends.
The dates mentioned span from July 2017 to December 2019, and they represent slots into which Disney will release films such as Tim Burton's remake of Dumbo, a sequel to Maleficent, 101 Dalmations spin-off Cruella, a new Mary Poppins film, and a Tinker Bell film with Reese Witherspoon in the leading role.
The biggest news, however, is that Jungle Book 2 will be released in one of the slots, perhaps as early as late 2018. That would potentially put the sequel in direct competition with Warner Bros.' own version of the Jungle Book. Warner had moved the release of its film back, possibly to put room between itself and Disney's version, but Disney's new plan could put a new wrinkle in the battle and spell disaster for the Warner effort.
The Jungle Book took the top spot at the box office with its debut a week ago, and in its second weekend, it easily surpassed Universal's The Huntsman Winter's War to stay in the top spot.
