The Spanish language film earned Javier Bardem the Best Actor Award in the Cannes Film Festival. However, the movie did not receive any nomination from the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award.

Biutiful is a story about Uxbal (Javer Bardem), a man who operates illegal activities but a good father. Stricken by cancer he tried to put his life in order for the sake of his children before his death.

Innarritu described the movie as emotionally powerful and Bardem as a “one of a kind” actor who prepared extensively for his role as Uxbal.

According to the movie director, perhaps one of the reasons why Bardem was unnoticed by the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild because the movie wasn’t released yet before the nominations and they don’t have the money to fully advertise the movie.

Another setback is that Biutiful is a sub-titled film. However, Inarritu said,"I have big hopes, I truly believe that once [they] see it, I hope they will rethink it."

Meanwhile in an interview with Reuters Javier Bardem admits he accepted the role as Uxbal in the movie because he was curious how it feels to be working with Innaritu who he thinks knows a lot about acting.

Bardem said that the director is a perfectionist who spends a lot of time working with the actors for them to portray the best performance for the film.

The actor also said, "It's been rewarding in the sense of putting yourself in front of a mirror where you face your limits and have to deal with them, This is, by far, the professional experience that has helped me the most when thinking about my craft, about my job, about my responsibilities as an actor.”
