Did 'American Idol' Take (Another) Dig At 'The Voice'?
by Sean ComerYour move, NBC?
Things have gotten a tad bit snippy between Team "Idol" and Team "Voice" ever since a certain choice remark by "The Voice" mentor Adam Levine, then the Television Critics Association's winter press tour in Pasadena. Now that "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson and Maroon 5 front man Levine have traded barbs, it appears FOX is getting into the act a little more directly.
It started last May during auditions on "The Voice." Levine quipped at one point "The people that we're not turning around our chairs for could win 'American Idol'." Jackson later fired back, "It's a great thing when talent can be simple, honest and revered as opposed to spinning around with gimmicky chairs."
Was that it? Of course not. Jackson commented during the TCA tour "The winner of 'The Voice,' I will remind you, was an artist who had a deal at Capitol Records for several years, a failed contract." He dismissed the NBC competitor as a show for "second-chance people."
Levine seemed like he took that one personally, chiding on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" while hyping the second season of "The Voice" that "he of anybody should know that if you're in this business, you need second, third, fourth and fifth chances."
DING! Round over.
Well, those were pawing jabs. Now, watch this new "Idol" TV spot below. To think of the reference that "only 'American Idol' produces real superstars" followed by a brief list of alumni and "314 #1 singles, 9 Grammys and an Oscar" is only coincidental with the context of the previous remarks? That takes some gullability.
