Detective Pikachu Takes on 'Avengers: Endgame'
by EG
Pokemon: Detective Pikachu hits theaters this weekend, and it will face the second-biggest movie of all time. Avengers: Endgame will still be tough to beat even in its third weekend, but the voice of Ryan Reynolds might remind moviegoers enough of Deadpool to take Pikachu over the top. Read on for details.
Legendary and Warner Bros.' Detective Pikachu has earned an impressive $5.7 million in Thursday night previews at the North American box office.
Ryan Reynolds voice stars as the titular Pikachu in the movie that sees the popular Pokemon team up with a human counterpart, Tim (Justice Smith), who has the ability to understand what Pikachu is saying. Together, they set off to solve the mystery of Tim's missing father.
Goosebumps director Rob Letterman is behind the first live-action Pokemon movie that also stars Kathryn Newton, Bill Nighy and Chris Geere.
Detective Pikachu's Thursday night earnings are on par with Warner Bros.' DC offering Shazam!, which pulled in $5.9 million in previews. The Zachary Levi-starrer went on to earn $53.5 million over its opening weekend early last month.
The strong showing on Thursday night could indicate a larger weekend for Pikachu, which is up against Avengers: Endgame, now in its third weekend. The Marvel title currently sits as the second-highest grossing film of all time, second only to James Cameron's Avatar.
