'Despicable Me 3' Will Win the Holiday Weekend

Look for Gru and his devoted minions to light up the July Fourth box office.
Universal and Illumination Entertainment's animated threequel, Despicable Me 3, should ignite plenty of fireworks in its debut at the box office this weekend. Showing no signs of sequel slowdown, the animated tentpole is tracking to open at $90 million or more for the three-day frame before racking up more big numbers on Monday and Tuesday, the official holiday.
Despicable Me 3 follows Gru (Steve Carell) as he meets up with his long lost and very rich brother, Dru (also voiced by Carell). Together, they take on a diamond thief (Trey Parker).
The other big winner of the weekend could be Edgar Wright's critically acclaimed Baby Driver from Sony/TriStar and MRC, which opened Wednesday to a strong $5.7 million, including $2.1 million in Tuesday night previews. The R-rated heist thriller hopes to serve as counterprogramming to more standard popcorn fare, with Sony pegging the movie's net budget at a modest $34 million before marketing.
