Davy Jones, Lead Singer of The Monkees, Passes Away at 66

Davy Jones, Lead Singer of The Monkees, Passes Away at 66 Davy Jones, frontman of the 1960's band The Monkees, has died at the age of 66. Jones suffered a heart attack at his home in Florida today and was later pronounced dead at the Martin Memorial Hospital.

You could consider The Monkees to be the original boy band... the group was assembled by TV execs back in the 1960's in an effort to capitalize off of Beatlemania by creating a TV show about a similar band. Jones was joined by three other young musicians: Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith.

Though The Monkees were originally only supposed to be a fictional band on the show, they quickly rocketed in popularity and became a huge hit as a group away from the show. Some of the band's hit songs include "Daydream Believer," the theme from their TV show "The Monkees," and "I'm a Believer," which was covered by Smash Mouth for the first "Shrek" movie.

The band was Grammy-nominated and also made a number of TV appearances, both as a group and as individuals. Jones himself appeared on an episode of "The Brady Bunch" and took Marcia to prom.

Below is a fan-shot video of Jones' last public performance on February 19 at the BB King Blues Club in New York, where he sang "Daydream Believer" and other hits. Jones' health appeared fine, making the sudden heart attack a bit of a shock.

Jones is survived by his third wife, Jessica, and his four daughters from previous marriages. He will also certainly be missed by the millions of Baby Boomers who grew up idolizing the teen heartthrob.
