Dark, Gritty 'The Little Mermaid' Reboot in the Works

Fairy tales are back, baby! Just as Disney decided to give up on princesses, other studios are looking at remaking all of the classics.

We already know about the "Sleeping Beauty" remake that will star Hailee Steinfeld in an "Inception"-like re-telling of the classic story. And we already know that there's not one, but two "Snow White" movies racing toward their release dates, one starring Kristen Stewart and the other starring Lily Collins.

Now it seems that "The Little Mermaid" will be the next fairy tale princess to get a dark remake. Sony has picked up the project, which is titled "Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale" and will undoubtedly be re-named later.

So, how will it be different? Sticking with the original story would be enough of a shift. Here's a fun fact: in the original story of the Little Mermaid, she doesn't become a human and marry the prince and live happily ever after. He ditches her and she turns into sea foam out of abject depression.

But Sony is taking things a step further: the story will center on a princess who wishes to marry the prince of a rival kingdom in order to save her own. However, the prince is in love with a mermaid who has given up her old life to be with him. My guess is that things aren't going to turn out well for anyone involved.
