The CW Renews Seven Series for Next Season
by EG
The CW doled out early renewals for seven of its series this week, relieving fans of any anxiety they might be feeling over their favorites' fates. Among the lucky series was the network's entire stable of DC superhero shows, but a few non-comic-book programs got some good news, too.
All four of the CW's DC series - Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and DC's Legends of Tomorrow - got renewals in the announcement. The four series have managed to maintain a relatively high profile so far this season, especially during a week-long cross-over event in December.
Also renewed were Supernatural, Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. It's no surprise that The CW would renew the venerable Supernatural, and Jane the Virgin has been a reliable, if unspectacular, performer for the network so far.
The renewal of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a bit more difficult to explain, but not much. The series, now in its second season, has been among the lowest-rated shows on broadcast TV, and it draws a small audience even by CW standards. However, its following is devoted, and it gets widespread acclaim from critics. It's also one of only two CW series, along with Jane the Virgin, to win a major industry award; star Rachel Bloom won a Golden Globe last year and is nominated again this year.
