The CW Planning Wonder Woman Series, 'Smallville' Style
by Andy NeuenschwanderThe CW is quickly becoming a safe house for homeless superheroes.
Last year, NBC attempted to develop a "Wonder Woman" series starring Adrianne Palicki as the classic DC Comics superheroine. That didn't exactly pan out, so the Amazon princess is up for grabs.
Enter The CW: the network that brought you another DC superhero in a TV series with the long-running "Smallville" and its take on the Superman mythos. The network is also premiering "Arrow," a show based on the Green Arrow, who made an appearance in "Smallville" as well.
While Wonder Woman never appeared on "Smallville," it looks like she's next on The CW's list for superhero adaptations. The network is developing a series, tentatively titled "Amazon," about Wonder Woman's origin. From the few details we have, it sounds like the show will focus almost solely on Diana's early life on Themyscira, the all-female island of Amazon warriors from which she originates.
So there's a good chance that, like with "Smallville," we won't be seeing Diana in that iconic Wonder Woman outfit for a while, even if the show is picked up. That might be a good thing, though, considering how much controversy there was over the costume for the NBC series.
Meanwhile, plans for a "Wonder Woman" movie are still slow going, after some buzz last year that "The Avengers" director Joss Whedon would put a project together. If Warner Bros. wants to compete with Marvel's "Avengers," a Justice League movie will have to happen sometime soon... and you can bet that Wonder Woman will be a part of that.
If Wonder Woman can finally be successfully brought back to the small screen, maybe that will provide some momentum for a Wonder Woman movie, huh?
But here's the big question: who gets to play Diana this time?
