She debuted the title song for the movie, which opens in limited release this Friday, on an awards show recently. Even though the movie has not been reviewed, some are saying Paltrow's performance as washed up country singer Kelly Canter could earn her an Oscar nomination. Paltrow last won for her role in 1998's Shakespeare in Love. Screenings in various cities have drawn mixed reviews online with some saying it's a great movie and performance and some saying it's not.

Strong female characters with Southern accents have boded well for two Oscar winners. Sandra Bullock won last year for her performance as a tough Memphis football mom in The Blind Side. Reese Witherspoon won an Oscar for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in Walk the Line.

Paltrow has been missing from starring roles recently but some attention for her role as Pepper Potts, Tony Starke's faithful assistant in Iron Man. Country Strong is not only a return to drama but she does her own singing as well. This is not the first time Paltrow has done her own singing in a film. She performed with Huey Lewis in Duets and their song, Cruisin' was a pop hit. The other actors in the movie, Garrett Hedlund, Leighton Messter and Tim McGraw, also do their own singing.

The movie is in limited release to qualify for the awards season. Country Strong opens nationwide on Jan. 7, 2011.
