Could Chelsea Handler Replace Craig Ferguson on CBS Late Night?

Could Chelsea Handler Replace Craig Ferguson on CBS Late Night? Could we finally be seeing a woman on CBS late night soon?

Earlier today, E! talk show host Chelsea Handler tweeted out a photo of a "business meeting," featuring her sitting with her dog Chunk and looking over some CBS-branded papers. While the pic seems to have been posted solely for the purpose of showing off Chunk's adorable behavior, it lit a firestorm of rumors about Handler's next step.

Rumors have been swirling for a while now that Handler will be leaving her E! show "Chelsea Lately" and attempting to land a late-night show elsewhere. Though "Chelsea Lately" has had a long run on E!, Handler's contract is about to expire and declining ratings for the show don't make for a positive outlook on re-negotiations.

Those rumors picked up even more with the announcement of Stephen Colbert as the new host of CBS' Late Show, to replace David Letterman. That move meant that the network passed over Late Late Show host Craig Ferguson...and now Ferguson might not even keep his current job with execs at CBS saying that the gig hasn't been decided yet.

While Colbert got an overwhelming positive response from his fan base, CBS is facing some heat for missing out on the opportunity to put a woman or a person of color into the Late Show host role. After all, it hasn't happened yet and these hosts tend to stick around for many years.

So, is CBS considering Handler for the Late Late Show gig to replace Ferguson? Not so fast, says CBS, who claims that Handler's meeting was with their syndication division, most likely to discuss a sitcom. In the past, Handler had the sitcom "Are You There, Chelsea?" on NBC for one season.

Would Handler be a good fit for CBS in late night? It's hard to say, considering the fact that Handler's show has been suffering in the ratings over the past couple of years, not to mention the fact that late night talk shows as a whole haven't been home runs in terms of ratings. However, the built-in fan base might be too good for CBS to pass up.
