Future Film News: Kevin Costner Confirmed as Pa Kent in New 'Superman' Flick

As we reported a few weeks ago, rumors have been rampant about Kevin Costner being cast for a role in the latest Superman installment "Superman: Man of Steel," though little was known about which role he would land.

Now we know the "Field of Dreams" star will be returning to his rural roots.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Costner has signed on to play Superman’s adoptive father. As Jonathan Kent (aka Pa Kent), Costner will take on the head of household role in the movie that will be co-produced by “The Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan.

A statement from the studio shares support for the casting choice:

"Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman. Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest superhero of all time."

The movie will be directed by Zack Snyder, of “Watchmen” and “300.”

Diane Lane has been cast opposite of Costner as Martha Kent. Henry Cavill will take on the iconic role of Superman, as the first-ever non-American to portray Clark Kent.
