Dr. Conrad Murray Appealing Conviction, Likely Facing Civil Case

Crowds gathered around outside the L.A. County court room where Dr. Conrad Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter yesterday in the death of Michael Jackson, cheering the verdict and declaring that justice had been done. Of course that's not how Murray and his attorneys see things.

Murray was immediately sent to jail until his sentencing hearing, and Murray's attorneys are already talking about an appeal.

According to MTV News, though, for Conrad's lawyers, it's first things first. Murray faces a sentencing hearing on the morning of November 29th, and could see as much as four years in jail and the loss of his medical license.

"What matters most right now is trying to keep Dr. Murray from taking up a prison cell in this community," Murray's defense attorney Ed Chernoff said after the verdict.

"That's what we're focusing on right now and we'll deal with an appeal after that."

While Murray's reportedly weren't surprised by the verdict, they contend that in denying them the ability to present evidence on Jackson's serious financial concerns and past durg use, Murray had been denied a fair trial.

"I think that's essentially what denied Dr. Murray a fair trial in this case," said Murray's other defense attorney Nareg Gourjian.

In the meantime, Michael Jackson's father said "there's more" upon leaving the courthouse, which likely refers to an additional civil case against the Dr. Murray. The Jackson famliy is likely to seek extensive damages for medical malpractice.
