Coca-Cola Super Bowl Commercial Causes Twitter Outrage
by Andy NeuenschwanderWhen you think about controversial Super Bowl commercials, a few companies come to mind...but Coca-Cola is not usually one of them.
With GoDaddy sitting this Super Bowl out (maybe Danica Patrick finally found her dignity), viewers needed a new company to be outraged at based on their 60-second ad. Enter Coke.
The beverage giant aired a quiet ad featuring shots of American families of various ethnicities, all while voices sang "America the Beautiful" in a number of languages, ranging from English to Spanish to Arabic.
Sounds nice, right? The commercial obviously set out with an uplifting message of peace: Americans come in all shapes and sizes, and our diversity is part of what makes our country beautiful. Also, drink Coca-Cola.
The problem is, Coca-Cola forgot about racists.
Immediately after the commercial aired, Twitter blew up with tweets of outrage against the company. "Nice to see that coke likes to sing an AMERICAN song in the terrorist's language" wrote Twitter user @tylerwyckoff24. "Way to go coke. You can leave America."
Twitter user @annalangleyy had a similar reaction: "Still confused as to why they were singing about America in all those foreign languages in the Coke commercial. We speak English..."
Well, at least they both used proper grammar. That's more than we can say for @danielle_raab, who wrote, "it's called English, your in America...not 3542 different languages."
Thankfully, the tweets in support of the commercial greatly outweighed the negative ones. And if anything, we can thank Coke for taking the spotlight off of Cheerios and avoiding any more unneeded outrage over their follow-up commercial featuring an interracial family.
