Clint Eastwood Steals Show at Republican Convention, and Not in a Good Way
by Andy NeuenschwanderLadies and gentlemen, we now live in a world in which Clint Eastwood has started a meme.
The veteran actor took the stage at the Republican National Convention Thursday night, telling a cheering crowd that it was time for President Barack Obama to "go." Eastwood continued on with a speech that had him rambling or trailing off at points, leading many viewers to wonder what was wrong.
But they hadn't seen anything yet: Eastwood's speech then turned into a debate between Eastwood and an imaginary Obama in an empty chair on the stage.
To reiterate: Clint Eastwood argued with an empty chair on stage at the RNC last night.
Naturally, Twitter nearly exploded and before Mitt Romney even took the stage to deliver his acceptance speech for the nomination, the Internet had come up with a new meme: Eastwooding. Eastwooding is when you argue with or talk to an empty chair, and the meme has thus far been expressed mostly through POV pictures of people pointing accusatorily at empty chairs. Here's an example:
That's just one of many. Trust me.
Naturally, this was all a bit embarrassing for the Republicans, and critics and pundits have been bashing Eastwood's speech since it aired. Possibly worse for the Republicans, though, is the fact that Eastwood's antics completely overshadowed Mitt Romney's speech, which was supposed to be the main event of not only the evening, but the four-day convention.
But hey, at least we got a new meme out of it, right? I was getting pretty tired of planking.
Here's the speech in its entirety... the crazy starts happening a little after 3:00. As for good ol' Clint's acting career, he'll be appearing next in "Trouble with the Curve," starring Amy Adams and Justin Timberlake.
