Not So Fast: Chord Overstreet's 'Glee' Future Not Set In Stone

Not So Fast: Chord Overstreet's 'Glee' Future Not Set In Stone Breathe, Gleeks. Breathe.

The shot-callers of “Glee” know they have some ‘splaining to do about Chord Overstreet being recently “fired.”

Yeah, about that: he wasn’t. He never was, said a source close to the situation to TVLine. Quite the opposite.

“His option to be a series regular was just not picked up at this time,” clarifies the source. “If Chord wants to appear on Glee, the choice is his. The Glee writers like his Sam character, and have plans to write for him. He and his reps have been told that he is welcome back to Glee, and everyone hopes he will show up on August 10 when filming begins.”

The confusion apparently started recently when Overstreet, who joined McKinley High’s New Directions last fall as transfer student Sam Evans – wasn’t promoted to series-regular status alongside co-stars Darren Criss and Harry Shum, Jr. TVLine’s inside source points that there’s little to be read into the decision. After all, it took two full seasons before Shum was promoted to his new status.

““If Chord has a great season, which we expect he will, then he will become a regular like Harry, possibly as early as January.”

Overstreet tweeted Friday, “It’s been a good year. Too bad it’s over. Time for summer and starting fresh.” It could be an iffy year for cast decisions. Creator Ryan Murphy told Ryan Seacrest not long ago on Seacrest’s syndicated radio show that most primary cast members would be graduating this coming season, with the next class of New Directions members being phased in throughout the season.

“Do we really want to have an eight-year [high school] senior?” Murphy asked rhetorically. “The only way somebody could stay on the show is if they flunk, and that is always a possibility. I think Brittany is pulling straight Fs.”
