Chevy Chase Drops 'N-Word' on 'Community' Set
by Andy NeuenschwanderThere is little doubt that ousted "Community" showrunner Dan Harmon was at times difficult to work with: those involved with the first three seasons of the show noted long hours and reported frequent clashed between Harmon and the network.
But the big story during Harmon's tenure was his clash with Chevy Chase, which involved Chase leaving a nasty voicemail for Harmon, which Harmon later played in front of a crowd at a small show in West Hollywood. Accounts of how the fight started vary depending on whom you ask, and with two big personalities like Chase and Harmon, it has been tough to say who started it.
Until now.
While shooting for the upcoming (and currently delayed) fourth season of "Community" on Friday, Chevy Chase reportedly dropped the "N-word" on set. According to THR, Chase used the racial slur while expressing frustration about the direction of his character. Making matters worse was the fact that Chase used the slur in the presence of co-stars Donald Glover and Yvette Nicole Brown, both African-American.
Chase rather promptly apologized, but this is a revealing incident. With this evidence, perhaps it was the case in the Harmon feud that it was Chase's attitude all along, and not Harmon's that cause the clash.
In any case, we won't be able to see how Chase's outburst affects the show, if at all, until NBC decides to put "Community" back on its schedule. Plan on a late replacement if "Guys With Kids" gets canceled.
