Chelsea Handler Set to Host 1st-Ever Netflix Talk Show
by Andy NeuenschwanderIt's official: Chelsea Handler is going streaming.
Netflix announced today that Handler will become the host of the streaming service's first original talk show once her run on "Chelsea Lately" ends this August.
To call it a "late night" talk show on Netflix might be a stretch, since technically it would be available to watch whenever viewers felt like it. But judging by the descriptions of the show's format, it sounds like it will be almost exactly like "Chelsea Lately" with Handler discussing timely topics and inviting on guests for interviews.
In fact, the statement from Netflix announcing Handler's new show addressed the "late night" label: "The Internet has disrupted many of the conventions of traditional television and together with Chelsea Handler, Netflix is looking forward to reimagining the late night talk show for the on-demand generation, starting with the late night part."
Handler released a statement as well, in her typical tone: "If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested," she said. "I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move. I'm more excited than I've been in awhile, and the team at Netflix is the most forward thinking, alert group I've sat down with in ages. No offense to the Shahs of Sunset."
As of yet, Netflix has not announced how the show will appear on the site in terms of timing and frequency, but one would have to assume that there will be challenges in shooting a talk show day-of and getting it onto the site that same night. Still, that will likely be the goal in order to keep the topics and jokes current.
An official premiere date has not been set, but Netflix is looking to start Handler's show sometime in 2016.
