Channing Tatum and His Abs Will Soon Join the X-Men
by Andy NeuenschwanderYou may have already suspected that Channing Tatum was some kind of mutant because of his abs, but now it's confirmed.
The "Magic Mike" star has officially been cast as Gambit in upcoming X-Men films, as confirmed by producer Lauren Shuler Donner. The role was previously held by "Friday Night Lights" star Taylor Kitsch, who played the fan-favorite mutant in the not-so-fan-favorite "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."
Donner had nothing but great things to say about the casting. "He's a rogue, Channing, he's a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau," she said, "and he can handle the action—we all know that! And he's got a really good heart."
She added the fact that Tatum hails from Alabama and should have a leg up on other actors in adopting the tricky Cajun accent that Gambit has, just based on proximity. In fact, Tatum's dad is from New Orleans, so there might be some truth to that.
As for Tatum, we know he's thrilled with the part, as he has expressed his interest in playing the role before. "Gambit was always like the woman loving, cigarette smoking, drinking—you know he was the punk rock of all the superheroes," he said in an interview with Total Film.
In fact, Tatum was rumored to have been lobbying producers for the role of late, hoping to sneak in past Kitsch in case of a re-casting. Looks like it worked!
What do you think of the choice? Should they have stuck with Kitsch, or is Channing the guy to play Remy?
