Celeb-Backed Candidates Underperform in This Week's Election

Many celebs went all in on their endorsement of candidates in this week's midterm election, but in many cases, the endorsements didn't result in victory. Read on for details.

She was a Bey late and a dollar short.
Fans are roasting Beyoncé for her 11th-hour endorsement of Senate hopeful Beto O’Rourke on Tuesday, with some even blaming her for the Texas Democrat’s loss to Sen. Ted Cruz.
The Houston-born songstress urged her fans to get out and vote for O’Rourke, posting photos on Instagram of herself dressed in all black and wearing a matching “Beto for Senate” cap.
“We can’t voice our frustrations and complain about what’s wrong without voting and exercising our power to make it right,” she wrote to her 119 million followers. “We need you.”
But many were quick to point out that the pop queen’s effort was too little, too late.
“You have such a huge, influential voice and you wait until Election Day to post this?!” one flummoxed fan wrote. “Beto needed you sooner. Maybe you could’ve actually made a difference.”
“Lol these posts a week ago could have made the difference in young voters,” someone else noted.
O’Rourke was eventually beaten by Republican incumbent Cruz in the closely watched race. Cruz captured 50.9 percent of the vote compared to O’Rourke’s 48.3 percent.
Meanwhile, one of pop star Taylor Swift’s two Tennessee endorsements also fell flat.
The “Shake it Off” singer’s pick for Senate, Democrat Phil Bredesen, lost to Trump-backed Republican Marsha Blackburn by 5.4 points in the hotly-watched, open-seat race.
Swift’s pick for the House, incumbent Democrat Jim Cooper, did however, manage to handily fend off his challenger from the right Jody Ball.
And it looks like Oprah’s support for Georgia gubernatorial hopeful Stacey Abrams couldn’t make the difference. Abrams trails Republican Brian Kemp by 1.6 points, as a possible runoff looms over the too-close-to-call race.
