Carpool Karaoke TV Series on the Way

According to the Hollywood Reporter, James Corden is looking for a cable or online home for a series based on his The Late Late Show with James Corden segment Carpool Karaoke. The segment has become a YouTube sensation, drawing hundreds of millions of views to episodes featuring stars such as Adele, Justin Bieber, One Direction and Mariah Carrey singing along with Corden as they drive around in a car.

There is a precedent for all aspects of the idea. Carpool Karaoke itself is reminiscent of Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, in which Seinfeld drives around chatting with a comic guest. The notion of turning a late-night show segment into a stand-alone series is also not new; the Lip Sync Battle segment of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon was turned into a series on Spike TV last year. Not coincidentally, Spike plans to air a new series called Caraoke Showdown later this year.

The proposed Carpool Karaoke series is reportedly getting interest from more than one potential TV home, despite the fact that Corden himself will probably not be the host of the show. He will, however, executive produce the project and may make occasional appearances in front of the camera.
