Carly Rae Jepsen Released a New Song, And Yes It's Really Really Really Catchy
by Andy Neuenschwander
It's been three years since the release of Carly Rae Jepsen's merciless earworm "Call Me Maybe." You probably only just now got it out of your head.
But there is no rest for Carly Rae. No brain will go unpunished with the incessant repeats of a hooky chorus with lyrics simple enough that your 8-year-old kid can sing them on end.
Yes, Carly Rae Jepsen has released another single.
The new song is titled "I Really Like You," which sounds a bit heavy-handed and literal until you actually hear the chorus. Then you realize that it's actually hugely heavy-handed and literal.
You see, the verses and their respective lyrics and melodies are irrelevant here. This song comes down the the catchy repeating of the word "really" in every chorus in a melody so earwormy that you'll have it stuck in your head after a mere 20 seconds of listening.
For those keeping track, there are 6 "reallys" in one line of the chorus, repeating three times and totaling 18 per chorus. The chorus repeats three times with a bonus two repeats of the "really" lines for an extra 12, meaning that Carly says the word "really" 66 times in this song.
Despite that, this has all the makings of another hit summer song for Carly Rae, especially since she seems to have ditched the sticky-sweet pop for a more synthy, nouveau-Taylor-Swift sound. Expect to hear this on the radio a lot.
May God have mercy on our souls.
