'Captain Planet' Live-Action Movie Officially in Development

You know you were just waiting for this announcement: Angry Filmworks, who brought us the "Transformers" movies, will be teaming up with Cartoon Network to make a live-action movie adaptation of "Captain Planet."

Producer Don Murphy hinted that the plan is for more than one: "His adventures are known worldwide and he is recognized across generations. We expect to make a spectacular series of films with the amazing team at Cartoon Network." Hear that? a series of films.

This could either be a huge success or a total disaster. If you look at what happened to Nickelodeon's "Avatar: The Last Airbender," signs point to disaster. But an early version of a "Captain Planet" script that had it set in a darker, more post-apocalyptic setting (dark? Oh no, it sounds like "The Last Airbender!") was said to actually be a pretty good script.

Of course, you'll have some 20 and 30-something audiences going for nostalgia's sake, but the adaptation could have a lot of draw with younger audiences as well due to potential casting. After all, remember that the "Planeteers" were a set of five teenagers with elemental rings (the Heart kid totally got the short end of the stick, though), and that could mean getting a bunch of buzz-worthy up-and-coming stars in those roles.

Who would you want to see cast in the movie? Who's your ideal Captain Planet? Let us know in the comments. Also, does anyone else just think of this sketch from "Robot Chicken" when they hear "Captain Planet?"
