Captain America: Civil War Scores Massively Abroad

The international opening of Captain America: Civil War is a sure sign that the new Avengers saga is ready to take on all of the year's other superhero movies, and it might be able to register as one of the biggest superhero movies of all time. That's especially impressive, given that Civil War has yet to debut on its home turf.

Civil War began rolling out in international markets last week, and the response has been big. In its first five days of release, Civil War took in $202 million, enough to put it in 14th place on the list of all time international openings and in a virtual tie with the international opening of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Civil War also set some records. It posted the biggest opening of all time in Mexico, Brazil and the Philippines, and it had the biggest opening of the year in Germany.

It's worth noting, however, that the international opening of Civil War fell well behind that of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the latter film failed to live up to expectations with its domestic performance. There's a big difference between critical responses to the films, though; Civil War currently has a 95% percent "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as compared to 27% for Batman v Superman. That perception could make all the difference when Civil War opens in the U.S. on May 6.
