Captain America: Civil War: How Big is It?

When Captain America: Civil War debuted last week, it became one of the biggest movies of the year, but its opening weekend wasn't quite as big as some had thought it might be. Now that the Marvel movie is about to head into its second weekend, where does it stand compared to the year's other hits?

Civil War took in $179 million in its opening weekend, enough to give it the biggest opening weekend of the year ahead of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which took in $166 million, and Deadpool, which earned $132 million during its opening weekend. The only other movie to take in more than $100 million in its opening weekend so far this year is The Jungle Book, which earned $103 million.

The real test of Civil War will be in its staying power. After its big opening, Batman v Superman faded quickly and after six days had earned just $201 million. Civil War is doing marginally better, having taken in $215 million in the same six-day period, although the difference is almost entirely made up by the difference in the two movies' opening weekends.

Civil War's second weekend will probably tell the tale. Batman v Superman experienced a huge drop off of nearly 70% in ticket sales in its second weekend, while Deadpool saw only a 57% drop. Without significant competition from new releases, Civil War will probably fare well in its second weekend and be well on its way to claiming the title of 2016's top movie to date.
