Can 'Suicide Squad' Make It Four in a Row?
by EG
If Suicide Squad can hold on to the top spot at the box office this weekend, it will achieve the rarest of feats at the 2016: four weeks in a row at the top spot. It probably won't happen, though, since ticket sales for the comic-book movie have been steadily falling off over the previous three weeks, and a late-summer newcomer is likely to take the lead for this final weekend of summer.
The week's top movie is probably going to be Don't Breathe, a home-invasion horror film with a modest budget. It's projected to take in about $10 to $15 million for the weekend, which isn't much for a summer movie but will likely to be enough to win a weekend without much fresh competition.
Suicide Squad has remained on top for three weeks despite overwhelmingly negative critics' reviews and lukewarm audience reaction. It has benefitted from weak competition, including last weekend's Ben-Hur, a big-budget tentpole that was supposed to draw big crowds but instead flopped spectacularly.
The comeptition is even weaker this weekend, with the actioner Mechanic: Resurrection and sports biopic Hands of Stone the only other new movies besides Don't Breathe. Still, Suicide Squad would need to hold extraordinarily well from last weekend, during which it took in $20 million, to best Don't Breathe.
