Broncos Trade Tim Tebow To New York Jets
by Sean ComerThe Denver Broncos have made one might haul this week.
First, the AFC West contenders jumped ahead of the pack and signed former Super Bowl MVP and four-time NFL MVP quarterback Peyton Manning Tuesday. Today, ESPN confirmed that the Broncos have dealt last year's Broncos workhorse QB Tim Tebow to the New York Jets.
In return for the 24-year-old, the Broncos get the Jets' upcoming fourth and sixth-round picks in the 2012 NFL Draft. Getting the 35-year-old Manning - four major neck surgeries and all - for a five-year, $96-million contract made Tebow expendable despite his massive 2011 starting campaign.
In only his second NFL year, 2010 first-round pick and former University of Florida Heisman winner Tebow led the Broncos to the AFC West title and into the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Broncos didn't make it past the AFC Divisional round, where they were beaten by the eventually Super Bowl-bound Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
Tebow has three years and a $1.1-million base salary remaining on a contract the Jets will reportedly honor. He'll spend at least his first year on that contract going from last year's sensational starter, to Jets QB Mark Sanchez's backup. Sanchez himself just two weeks ago received a three-year, $40.5-million contract extension.
