Brace Yourself for the 'Sherlock Gnomes' Movie
by Andy NeuenschwanderOkay, everyone. It's officially over. We should stop making movies now.
Collider is reporting that a sequel to "Gnomeo and Juliet" is moving forward under Disney, following the success of the original 3D animated film. Let's all take a moment and really consider the ramifications of that: there will actually be more than one movie about lawn gnomes acting out classic works of fiction.
The sequel will move away from Shakespeare (good thing too: ol' Bill will need a rest from all that rolling over in his grave) and take on Sherlock Holmes instead. I can barely hold back the vomit in informing you that the title of this sequel will be "Sherlock Gnomes."
This is just one of many recent adaptations of the classic literary figure: there was the "Sherlock Holmes" movie with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law (which spawned a sequel), as well as the BBC modernization with Benedict Cumberbatch and "The Hobbit" star Martin Freeman. This fall, CBS will premiere its own Sherlock adaptation with "Elementary," which features Jonny Lee Miller as the great detective and Lucy Liu as a female Watson.
The original "Gnomeo and Juliet" grossed just under $100 million domestically, with about $193 million worldwide. However, it earned a failing grade from Rotten Tomatoes at 56%, with an exceptionally low audience rating of 52%. Its Cinemascore rating, on the other hand, was a solid B+.
You can decide for yourself where this rates on the awful movie idea scale. I'll be actively avoiding movie trailers for the next couple of years.
