Box Office Wrap Up: 'G.I. Joe' Kicks Competition's Butt

In box office news for the weekend, Bruce Willis’ “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” held on to the top spot with an iron grip, grossing around $41.2 million over the weekend. It was enough to bump animated “The Croods” down to second place, but noticeably short of the $54.7 million that 2009’s “G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra” managed to haul in for its premiere weekend.

Though it fell, “The Croods,” starring the voice talents of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, and Ryan Reynolds, still managed to do well for itself with a $26.5 million take. That is, however, a 39.5 percent drop from its opening weekend, where it brought in an impressive $88.6 million.

Taking the third spot at the box office was “Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor,” which opened at $22.3 million.

Dropping a little was the political thriller “Olympus Has Fallen,” which already surpassed expectations, and brought in an additional $14 million for the weekend.

In fifth was "Oz The Great and Powerful" taking in $11.6 million for a cumulative gross of $198.3 million. The James Franco and Mila Kunis “Wizard of Oz” prequel continues to draw audiences.

With a surprisingly bad opening came number six, Stephanie Meyer’s follow-up to “Twilight,” alien fantasy and romantic thriller “The Host.” The film brought in just $11 million, and reviews have not been kind to the film, which stars Max Irons and Saoirse Ronan.

"The Call" ($4.8 million), "Admission" ($3.5 million), "Spring Breakers" ($2.7 million) and the financially disappointing "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" ($1.3 million) finished off the top ten for the weekend.
