Box Office Preview: 'Compton' Wins Again

On a weekend when no one expects a big turn-out at the box office, Straight Outta Compton is widely predicted to come out on top in terms of ticket sales for the third weekend in a row.

This weekend's highest-profile new release, No Escape, got a head start on the competition by opening on Wednesday. The action thriller starring Owen Wilson, Pierce Brosnan and Lake Bell took in $1.2 million on its opening day. That was unfortunately not even enough to beat 'Compton', which took in $2.1 million on the same day. No Escape is expected to earn around $9 million for the weekend.

We Are Your Friends, the Zac Efron vehicle about LA club DJs, is expected to take in a comparable amount, somewhere in the $8 to $10 million range. The Christian family drama War Room has more modest goals; it opens in fewer theaters than the other new releases and is expected to earn about $5 million.

Those predictions mean that all three of the new releases are likely to fall short of 'Compton', which is predicted to take in another $15 million over the weekend, an amount that would push its total gross to date to over $130 million.
