Bob Hoskins, Star of 'Hook' and 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit,' Dead at 71
by Andy NeuenschwanderThere's sad news out of Hollywood today: Bob Hoskins, the legendary character actor, has passed away at the age of 71.
Hoskins had been battling pneumonia for a while, and finally succumbed to the illness this week, according to a statement from his family and reps.
The British actor leaves behind an impressive body of work, including comedic and dramatic roles of all types. Those who grew up in the 1990's may remember him fondly as Smee from "Hook," while others might know him as the toon-averse private eye Eddie Valiant in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit."
Others still might know him as Mario from the "Super Mario Bros." movie, but we can all pretend that one never happened.
Hoskins' career includes over 100 credits, including an Oscar-nominated performance in "Mona Lisa." In addition to his many fictional characters, Hoskins played real-life figures more than once, including turns as Nikita Khrushchev and J. Edgar Hoover.
TV host and fellow Brit Stephen Fry tweeted out this thoughts on Hoskins' passing: "Oh no, Bob Hoskins. Gone? That’s awful news. The Long Good Friday is one of the best British movies of the modern era. A marvellous man."
Hoskins is survived by his wife, Linda, and his four children: Alex, Sarah, Rosa and Jack.
