'Boardwalk Empire' Season Two Premieres Tonight: Watch Action-Packed Trailers and Previews

'Boardwalk Empire' Season Two Premieres Tonight: Watch Action-Packed Trailers and Previews The Emmy-Award winning HBO series "Boardwalk Empire" returns to HBO tonight at 9 p.m. EST for its second season, promising even more scheming, shady business and all-out war than in its stellar first season.

The first trailer released by HBO showed Steve Buscemi's Nucky Thompson wandering around in a dream-state, getting glares from many of his trusted friends and allies.

Based on the latest trailers, it turns out that was a metaphor for what's going down in the second season, when Michael Penn's Jimmy Darmody aligns with Al Capone and, with his father (played by Dabney Coleman) behind him, proceeds to attempt to unseat Thompson and take over Atlantic City.

Of course Michael Shannon's fascinatingly complex Prohibition Agent Nelson Van Alden fast on everyone's heels, along with the bad-ass assassin with half a face.

As the show's creator says in a behind-the-scenes video below, the new season's theme is "family, and how far they will go to protect it." By the looks of it, that's pretty damned far.

Can "Boardwalk" creator Terrence Winter take this masterfully produced show, which won eight Emmys out of 18 nominations, to another level in its second year? It's going to be a real joy finding out if he can.
