Blockbuster Chinese Erotic Film '3D Sex and Zen' - Coming to a Theater Near You?

What does it take to beat the opening-day 3D box office record of "Avatar" in Hong Kong? Apparently, all you need is "the world's first 3D softcore porn."

A movie titled "3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy" broke the opening-day record of "Avatar" in Hong Kong, earning $351,000 in a limited release. The movie, which was locally produced in Hong Kong, is a costume drama set in the Ming Dynasty era,  adapted from the novel The Carnal Prayer Mat and something of a remake of a previous Hong Kong movie, "Sex and Zen."

The movie features Japanese porn stars and apparently gets a little...er...intimate.

"3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy" recently landed North American distribution at Cannes thanks to Chinese-language film distributor China Lion. What sort of state the movie will be in if it ends up in American theaters remains to be seen, as the movie will almost undoubtedly have to carry an NC-17 rating. China, meanwhile, might not get the movie at all, as it's probably just too much for the censors.

So far, China Lion is targeting a release in both America and Canada through AMC and Cineplex. RealD, meanwhile, might have just found their savior.
