BIG Spoiler For 'Star Trek: Into Darkness' Slips Out... Who is Our Villain?
by Shannon KeirnanSomeone over at Entertainment Weekly is banging their head on a desk after accidentally leaking a major spoiler for the upcoming J.J. Abram’s directed “Star Trek: Into Darkness.”
Previously, there’s been no confirmation about which role “Sherlock” star Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing. Speculation ran amuck, of course, especially after the creeptastic trailer was released for the “Star Trek” sequel.
Whoever he is, he’s got a lot of power behind him, and he's a nasty dude.
Cumberbatch’s character’s identity has only been listed as “John Harrison,” probably intended to mislead audiences… until now.
Promotional material for Entertainment Weekly’s upcoming issue featured a picture of Chris Pine alongside Cumberpatch.
“VOYAGE INTO THE NEW STAR TREK KIRK & KHAN” reads the headline.
Whoops. So is Cumberbatch the nefarious, genetically enhanced villain Khan?
The image has since been removed, only making a stronger argument than Cumberbatch will not be mild-mannered John Harrison after all.
But was it a simple mistake? IMDB.com lists Cumberbatch as playing Khan… with the self-saving “rumored” tacked on after.
Did the writer simply go off of what most fans are saying anyway?
The sequel to “Star Trek” focuses on the crew of the Enterprise as they discover an “unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization,” and Captain Kirk will set out to find and destroy this “one man weapon of mass destruction.”
Hint: KHAAAAAN!!
“Star Trek: Into Darkness” will premiere this summer. Beside Pine and Cumberbatch, Zachary Quinto returns as Spock, with Zoe Saldana, Alice Eve, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, and John Cho.
