'Better Call Saul' Season 1, Episode 3 - 'Nacho' Recap
by Andy Neuenschwander
After an excellent premiere week, "Better Call Saul" returned with an equally excellent third episode. Here, we saw Jimmy get a little deeper into the chaos unfolding around him, even having to do some of his own detective work in order to save his neck.
We open with a much younger Chuck meeting with his client in prison...his client named Jimmy McGill. Jimmy, it seems is facing property damage and assault charges, and could be listed as a sex offender.
Here, we get a little more background on Chuck and Jimmy's relationship: they're actually brothers, despite Jimmy's assertions in the premiere that they're no relation.
It would seem that Jimmy made a bit of a promise to Chuck that he would never again get involved in crime of any kind; that he would be on the straight and narrow from here forward. That makes his decision to take up the offer given to him by Tuco's buddy Nacho even harder.
It seems that Jimmy has a plan, though. With a few supplies from the nail salon, Jimmy gives a call to the Kettlemans and warns them that "they are coming" for their money. In classic Vince Gilligan style, it doesn't go quite as planned, but he still manages to get the message across.
But when he visits the Kettlemans' home, he finds that they're already missing, along with their two kids. He attempts to call Nacho to offer his services to "de-escalate the situation," but ends up getting grabbed by the cops...and brought to the station, where Nacho is in custody and asking for Jimmy McGill to represent him.
It would seem that Nacho didn't go through with his plan to steal from the Kettlemans, but someone else did. So Jimmy is put on the line: he has to get Nacho off the hook or else (and with guys like Nacho and Tuco, we know what "or else" here).
Jimmy's day gets worse when his feud with Mike escalates and Mike takes him down and agrees to cut a deal with the cops to press charges in order to get Jimmy to talk. But Mike makes his first awesome move of the show when he changes his mind because he belives Jimmy.
"Nobody wants to leave home," Mike says. He suggests that the Kettlemans might be hiding out nearby, since that's what people never expect.
So Jimmy heads out to the Kettlemans' house and, thanks to inspiration from their obnoxious family window decal that shows them camping, he heads out into the wilderness behind their house and sure enough, he finds them singing "Bingo was his name-O" with a big bag of cash.
Will seeing all of that money do the same to Jimmy as it did to Walt and corrupt him into a bad decision?
Saul line of the week: "When you find out how wrong you are about this, I'll take an Edible Arrangement as an 'I'm sorry,' heavy on the pineapple."
