'Ben and Kate' Season 1, Episode 11: 'B Squad' Recap

Ben does his morning announcements at the country club… including announcing that their previous starter, Lloyd, died the previous night. He waxes philosophical.

As he announced next to tee, Matt Swan, he recognizes the name as an old friend. The two chat.

Maddie helps her friend Norman study… although Norman’s a bit slow. He leaves, happily. Maddie likes him, though, because he doesn’t have a dad either. Kate encourages her daughter to keep attaining to get into the gifted program.

Ben comes in to tell Maddie and Kate he saw Matt Swan, who he almost went into business with… double-pizza business. Bunk bed pizza. Maddie asks Ben if he is friends with her dad, and Kate interferes before he can answer.

At the bar, BJ flirts with her disgusting new boyfriend Buddy. Not good timing to have him, either, because Wendy, her mother, is coming. She’s got to plan yet another fake story for her.

Kate goes to see Ms. West in the teacher’s lounge… to see if she can have a sneak peek about the gifted class test results. Ms. West tells her Maddie was very close, but didn’t quite get in. Ms. West tells her sometimes it’s harder for single-parent children. She encourages Kate to have Maddie try again next year. For now she will belong to the “B” squad.

Tommy goes to see Ben at the bar with bad news… Matt Swan stole the bunk bed pizza idea. Kate comes in with her own news… that she stole the curriculum so she can train Maddie in secret.

BJ and Tommy prepare to meet Wendy at the club. She begins to make up Tommy’s backstory, but her mother (Jane Seymour!) arrives. Tommy is now an interior designer named Paulo.

Kate comes home to a very nervous Ben… Rightfully so. Children are everywhere. He stole the entire B Squad. Kate does damage calls to their parents to make sure everyone is okay. Ben is determined to give the B Squad the same rights and education as the gifted kids.

They load the kids into Ben’s work van, and prepare to go to the planetarium—where the gifted kids are.

Tommy tries to encourage BJ to be honest with her mother, but she resists. He moves to take his glasses off, which apparently freaks BJ out and she agrees.

Since Kate couldn’t find the planetarium, Ben takes them to Bunk Bed Pizza. He runs inside and confronts his old partner. Matt reminds him that Ben sold the idea to him for beer and martial arts videos in college.

Finally everyone gets to the planetarium—and it’s closed. Kate has a freak out about how she sucks. She blames herself for Maddie not being gifted.

Tommy sees BJ at her work, and asks how it went with her mother. She admits she didn’t tell her… which Tommy figured on, and told her to meet them there. Wendy comes in and goes to the bar, hitting on Buddy. BJ and Wendy bond again over memories of Wendy stealing her daughter’s boyfriends.

Ben and Kate make up. They take the kids to the golf course at night to see the stars, and Tommy and BJ bring everyone bunk bed pizza. Kate impresses her mother by doing correct math about how many slices each kid gets.

The party is ruined a bit by the sprinklers.
