Ben Affleck and Bill Maher Yelled At Each Other About Islam
by Andy NeuenschwanderNormally, "Real Time with Bill Maher" features conservatives and liberals arguing with each other. But last week, it was two outspoken liberals who went at it.
Ben Affleck appeared on the show, promoting the newly released "Gone Girl," when the conversation turned to Islam. Maher is often considered to be as liberal as it gets, but his staunch opposition to religion has led him to views on Islam that Affleck called "gross" and "racist."
Maher was arguing that liberals should and often do stand up for liberal principles like gay rights and women's rights. However, he argued that liberals are too accepting of Islam, which causes a disconnect.
"But if you say, in the Muslim world, this is what is lacking, then they get upset," Maher said, referring to militant fundamentalist groups like ISIS and groups in Central Africa who mutilate the genitals of young girls.
Affleck jumped right in, pointing out that the crazy fundamentalists are only a small sliver of the total Muslim population.
"How about the more than a billion people who aren’t fanatical, who don’t punish women, who just want to go to school, have some sandwiches, and don’t do any of the things you say all Muslims do?" Affleck argued.
The discussion quickly escalated to a shouting match, with Affleck hanging his head in his hands more than once at Maher's stance on the issue.
Interestingly, Maher's stance is roughly the same of that of Fox News conservatives, who went viral with another very similar video.
