'Bad Moms Christmas' Off to a Slow Start
by EG
The coming weekend is unquestionably going to belong to Thor: Ragnarok, but comedy sequel A Bad Moms Christmas hoped to get a substantial portion of the leftovers. Part of the movie's strategy was to hit the ground running by opening on Wednesday instead of Thursday. Unfortunately, all the early opening did was point out the movie's weaknesses. The sequel, so far, is not measuring up to the original in terms of critics' reviews, audience reactions, or ticket sales.
STXfilms' A Bad Moms Christmas debuted to a muted $2.6 million on Wednesday from 3,615 theaters.
The sequel — a follow-up to the 2016 hit comedy Bad Moms — is opening midweek to provide some distance from Thor: Ragnarok, which unfurls everywhere on Friday.
Going after women, A Bad Moms Christmas had hoped to post a five-day debut in the $22 million-$25 million range, on par with the first film ($23.8 million).
Based on Wednesday numbers, the R-rated comedy may not clear $20 million unless it enjoys an especially strong Thursday and weekend.
So far, reviews are decidedly mixed. The movie's current score on Rotten Tomatoes is 27 percent, compared to 58 percent for the first. And while audiences bestowed the original Bad Moms with an A, the sequel was given a B.
Bad Moms stars Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn return in the sequel. This time, they rebel against the expectations of having to create the perfect holiday on top of hosting their own mothers, played by Cheryl Hines, Christine Baranski and Susan Sarandon. A Bad Moms Christmas reunites filmmakers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore with producer Suzanne Todd.
