Back to the Future: 90s-era 'Goldbergs' Spin-Off on the Way
by EG
The Hollywood Reporter reports that ABC is developing a spin-off to its popular sitcom The Goldbergs. Set in the 1990s, this new series will follow the antics of two high school teachers and their relationship with the school secretary's kids. Thus far, the network has ordered a script but not yet a pilot, and there is no commitment yet to schedule the series.
The spin-off will reportedly feature Bryan Callen's gym teacher character, Rick Mellor, although the new series will take place approximately a decade after the parent series, which is set in the 1980s.
The Goldbergs is currently one of ABC's highest-rated series. At the moment, it provides a solid lead-in for fellow sitcoms Speechless, Modern Family, and Black-ish on Wednesday nights.
The sequel spin-off of The Goldbergs is the second spin-off of a popular sitcom announced this week. News broke earlier in the week that CBS is developing a prequel spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. That new series will revolve around a young version of Big Bang's Dr. Sheldon Cooper. The spin-off will reportedly be produced by Big Bang's creators and showrunner, along with actor Jim Parsons, who plays the current version of Sheldon.
